ST. SIMONS ISLAND PICKLEBALL BRINGS PICKLEBALL TO ST. SIMONS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
St. Simons Island Pickleball Club recently helped the physical education staff bring the game of pickleball to students at St. Simons Elementary School. The program began when St. Simons Elementary physical education teacher Kim Richardson reached out to try and get assistance in acquiring pickleball equipment to support introduction of pickleball into the PE curriculum. SSIPB responded by purchasing portable nets and temporary line kits for the school. SSIPB members also collected enough used pickleball paddles and balls to allow each student in each class to have their own paddle and ball during class.
Students in grades 2 – 5 were able to participate in four sessions over the two week period when the pickleball curriculum was offered. Almost twenty members of SSIPB assisted the PE staff in instructing students in pickleball basics during the two week session.

“The kids were so excited to get the opportunity to experience playing pickleball,” said Kim Richardson. “Several have told me they are asking for pickleball paddles as gifts so they can continue to play outside of school.”
“Our charter calls for us to grow the game of pickleball,” stated SSIPB President Murray Pounds. “This was a great opportunity for SSIPB to do just that. We look forward to working with St. Simons Elementary in the future and bringing pickleball to other schools on St. Simons Island as well.”

SSIPB Board Elections
At the 2024 Annual Meeting, held December 2, an election to select SSIPB Board members for 2025 was held. Incumbents Bill Carmichael, Theresa Ellis, Susan Geeslin, Suzi Hassel, Mary Kline and Murray Pounds were elected to another term. In addition, Peter Hill was voted on the Board, replacing Karen Figueroa who decided not to serve another term. Our thanks to Karen for her service to the Board during 2024.
At its first quarterly meeting held January 9, 2025, elections were held for 2025 officers. Results of those elections were as follows: Murray Pounds, President, Mary Kline, Vice President, Bill Carmichael, Treasurer, and Theresa Ellis, Secretary. The Board also voted to ask Sarah Gregory join the Board, an invitation Sarah has accepted.
The Board also announced that quarterly meetings for the rest of the year will be held the second Thursday of the month in April, July and October. Meetings will be held at 10:00 a.m. in Room 112 of the Casino Building.
